Delight vs Drudgery Workshop
Delight vs Drudgery Workshop
A Parent's Guide to Teaching Children through Chores
Service Description
Every home has jobs that are never ending. Clothes must be washed and put away, dishes are in a constant state of being used, washed, and put away, meals must be planned, shopped for, and prepared, as nature goes through its different seasons there is work to be done in the yard. Children make messes in every room of the house and often are barely required to keep their room in a haphazard state. Parents often care more about the speed and efficiency of a task getting done so that ample time is left for other activities. Parents learn techniques which are best suited to their needs using scaffolding in their instruction. The program structure is geared toward helping parents to change their attitude about what is truly important for each family member individually and their family as a cohesive unit. This workshop is designed to help families recognize the need for child participation in household tasks and view family chores as an enjoyable time to connect, giving parents confidence to step back while children develop ownership and autonomy by: -Providing practical ways to organize family work. -Teaching parents how to teach/demonstrate specific tasks. -Communicating expectations and assigning age-appropriate chores. -Incorporating chores into daily schedule. -Teaching parents to value their child’s contribution. This program structure was designed to educate overwhelmed parents with children of all ages on the benefits of child participation in household tasks and debunks the widespread assumption that it is beneficial for children to stop working. Parents are under more stress than ever to facilitate their children's future success and often feel overwhelmed by the never-ending tasks that make up life. As parents learn to focus on being active participants in teaching age-appropriate tasks to children, they will find it allows them to maximize developmental milestones for their children, lessen their load, and have an increase in well-being for themselves and their children. After completion of the workshop parents confidently move forward in giving their children active responsibility in participating with the care and upkeep of the home and household tasks. Children who take an active role in their homes have better relationships with family members, a greater sense of value and well-being, and a higher likelihood of self-reliance in adulthood.
